The Ruins

One of the better horror films of recent years, is creepy and scary and the sort of thing that makes your skin crawl. Its a simple story- several tourists go to a temple in the Mexican jungle that happens to be off the beaten path. There is of course something there and the locals are not happy about visitors. I won’t say more since I’m going tempted to tell you way too much…which would be too much since the plot is simple. Its almost too simple. The reason the film works is that the film has decent characters and it does things that are decidedly not your typical horror movie choices. Its short, its sweet and it works. Its not perfect, there are one or two things I didn’t like, but on the whole its a very good very creepy film. Frankly while Brazil got upset about Touristas a year because it might make think people about going there, Mexico should worry since this film will make anyone think again about going into ancient ruins. (7.5 ish out of 10 on the horror scale because thinking about the screams makes my skin crawl)

Choke

I generally like the books from author Chuck Palahniuk,although I comprehend the reason why he has many detractors.His books frequently border on the absurd and they are full of bizarre and antipathetic characters with ambiguous intentions and inexistent morality.However,in my particular case,the vitality of the narrative and the force from the ideas are enough for making his work fascinating,at the same time it presents strange concepts with a simultaneously laconic and poetic style.If what I have just mentioned on the previous paragraph seems confusing is because Palahniuk’s work is very difficult to describe.So,how difficult would it be to take his work to the enormous screen? I suppose that the precedent established by the excellent film Fight Club has collection a very high standard which will be difficult to surpass on any other film based on a Palahniuk’s book.Choke is extremely far away from reaching the levels of Fight Club,but it still feels as a mediocre film which could not capture the sardonic sense of humor and fascinating characters’ psychology from the book.The main problem at adapting a literary work to the cinema is that even if the main story is respected,the author’s “voice” which made the book memorable will be missed.And it is exactly there where the vision of the director must get in,in order to achieving that identity or at least replace it with something interesting or unique.The previously mentioned Fight Club is a perfect example of that; but Clark Gregg is far from being David Fincher,and his weak direction cannot transmit any of the identity from the book.He only generates the minimum level of energy in order to keeping the story moderately interesting.If it was not for Sam Rockwell’s excellent performance,we would only have a collection of extravagant scenes and cynic dialogs which are not connected by the solid narrative flow Gregg should have achieved.Fortunately,Rockwell is absolutely credible and natural on his role,and his performance truly elevated the quality from the movie.Choke worked much better on the literary medium thanks to its structure,vivid descriptions and eloquent narrative.The film is an insipid and generic adaptation of the book.However,I did not dislike it,and I think it deserves a slight recommendation,because it did not bore me and,mainly,because of Rockwell’s performance.

The Hangover

Sometimes the title of a film can sell itself, or at the very least pique a viewer’s interest. Director Todd Phillip’s new comedy The Hangover does this and more by introducing an infinitely relatable premise and infusing it with a clever story to keeps the gimmick supported for the duration. While providing the requisite raunch, stupidity and laughs, The Hangover is bolstered more by its puzzle piece narrative then by straight up humour. The mark of a good comedy is one that can keep your interest in between the laughs; be it by human drama, character development or in this case, a meandering riddle.What do we really know about a hangover? We know we have one, and we know we drank too much. Often everything before, after and in-between can be a blur at best, and for three friends, Phil, Stu and Alan they certainly got the worst. Travelling to Las Vegas for a night of sin, gin and wins to celebrate their friend Doug’s (Justin Bartha) bachelor party they awaken the next morning to find their hotel room a tad dishevelled, a tiger in their bathroom, their memories wiped clean and their groom to be MIA. Playing the three worried bros respectively are Bradley Cooper as the bored-with-his-life school teacher, Ed Helms as the neurotic dentist and Zach Galifanakis as the awkward weirdo and soon to be brother in law of Doug. So unfolds the mystery; trying to find their missing friend before the wedding by piecing together the clues of their epic night out.For me the standout of the group was certainly Ed Helms. He plays the role straight, he is likable and he is funny. His characters arc is the most complete and entertaining and he certainly grounds his wilder counterparts nicely. The other players are certainly funny, yet the characters of Phil and Alan are not fully likable. Cooper’s Phil is a bit of a prick and Alan is flat out creepy. That aside the actors put forward such commendable efforts all is soon forgotten and the quick pace and continual humour keeps things fast, fun and frantic.As promised by the trailers, we get a cameo from the Mike Tyson who is funnier for being himself then for his actual performance, darting in an out with a great supporting performance is heather Graham as an escort and Mike Epps makes good use of his time as quote ‘Black Doug’. More hilarious yet is a closing cover for rapper 50 Cents’ Candy Shop which is as inspired as it is hilarious. The Hangover is certainly one of those comedies that is re-watchable, and likely to improve with repeat viewings. However it is probably a good thing actual hangovers are not this much fun; I’d rather die of laughter then alcohol poisoning.

Restraint

This is a good film typified by excellent acting, three interesting characters, a dark ambiance and a twist in the tale.While there are the usual moans about the typical movie style plot extension - where no-one is ever killed outright, they have to make a meal out of it- it is superior to most modern films in that it relies on the story and acting rather than explosions, explicit violence or other shock tactics.I had ever seen any of the three stars before but all three are names to watch.Well worth watching!
